West Ashley is the oldest and largest suburban town close to Charleston. It’s located West of the Ashley River and roughly 20 minutes from the city center. Over the years, West Ashley has become favored by families who prefer a more laid-back and economic way of life compared to living in Charleston or Mount Pleasant.

The first permanent English settlers came to West Ashley in 1670 and thus the town was dubbed as the “Birthplace of Charleston.” The area where these settlers landed is now a the historic site Charles Towne Landing. Local heritage is well preserved and you feel as though you’re walking back in time as you explore places like Ashley Hall and Magnolia Plantations.

The best thing about West Ashley is probably how it will captivate you with its charm. As you drive into the town, you’ll be welcomed by old oak trees. The simple life is at its best here and there are plenty amenities and scenic views for you to soak in. The Ashley Greenway is a 10-mile protected route for cyclists and pedestrians that connects most neighborhoods to the local shops and restaurants. It’s also the ideal place to live if you live to get out and play with your kids as West Ashley has a number of parks with athletic fields and play areas. If you’re ready to settle down somewhere that’s spacious yet convenient to get to Charleston City, West Ashley could be the next place you call home.
