Just across the harbor from Downtown Charleston lies James Island. It’s the closest suburb to Charleston which makes it an ideal location if you want to enjoy the benefits of the city but still be surrounded by more space and greenery. Better yet, Folly Beach is only a short drive away. The city and the beach? James Island is definitely the best of both worlds.

In 1992 the Town of James Island was founded but it wasn’t until 2012 that it was officially incorporated after four attempts to become independent. Since then, the Town has had a slow and steady growth. A great deal of importance has been given to education and the conservation of the island’s natural beauty over commercial development. As a result, the schools are highly rated and the community is very close-knit, loyal to supporting local businesses over commercial chains.

A majority of the land on James Island that are not a natural protected areas have already been developed. Thus, newer homes will most likely be priced much higher for smaller areas. Most of the homes on the island are of an older style, notably brick ranch. Even so, James Island has become a sought after place to live, not only for the value of the homes and character of the town, but also for the beautiful trees and picturesque marsh views.
